Mrs. Effie Mae (Smith) Stanley

June 10, 1926 – August 12, 2022

Sister Effie Mae Smith Stanley was born on June 10, 1926 in Horry County, Little River, South Carolina but raised in the Thomasboro community of the Township of Shallotte, North Carolina. Effie was called to the Lord on August 12, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Allen Smith and Mary Bellamy Livingston Smith in a beautiful blended family of nine children.

Effie was always wise beyond her years and continued to learn throughout her life. In fact, as an example to her grandchildren of the importance of learning, she attended adult education classes while in Miami, Florida.

Effie met and later married James Malcolm Stanley. Effie was fiercely independent and had a warrior spirit. She especially exhibited these qualities as she lovingly cared for her family and those in the community. She was known as a wonderful cook and baker, who loved to feed people whether at family gatherings or her friends and neighbors in the community.

Effie was primarily a housewife but she was also an active member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Supply, North Carolina, where she proudly served with the Women’s Mission Group and on the usher board. Additionally, as was typical for her, she volunteered to support the church in various other activities/events and in various capacities. She was an active member of the church until she moved to Miami, Florida with her daughter “Kaye” in 2010 where she spent her last years.

Effie was preceded in death by her husband, James Malcolm Stanley, and seven of her siblings: Harvey Smith, Emma Smith, Agnes Stanley, Marie Gore, Retha Stevenson, Alberta Bernard, Allene Stanley. She is survived by her two loving daughters: Arcarolyn “Kaye” Gibson and Carolyn Bryant; sister: Mary McMillian; son-in-law, James Gibson; four grandchildren: James Gibson, Jason Gibson, Joseph Gibson and Katelyn Bryant; three sisters-in-law: Barbara Stevenson Stanley, Catherine Stanley Robinson, and Mildred Stanley Watson; one former brother-in-law: Charlie Ray Vaught; best friend: Marylee Bryant; as well as host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at 2:00PM at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1229 Cedar Grove Rd. SW, Supply, NC 28462. Burial will follow at Riley-Hewett Cemetery, Off of Turkey Trap Rd. SW, Supply, NC. A walk-through viewing will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 3:30PM - 6:00PM in the Chapel of Peoples Funeral Home-Shallotte, NC., 5190 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, NC 28470 and at the church on Sunday, August 21, 2022,1-hour prior and following the services.

Kaye and Carolyn
Thinking of you with sympathy, with love, and with a prayer that God will bless you every day and keep you in his care.

Ms. Effie was a neighbor whom we adored. My sister (Lori) and I always wanted to go with our mom to home mission to Ms. Effie's house. She was a great cook. Her kindness and willingness to help was always above and beyond. So to Arcarolyn and Carolyn and rest of the family we send our deepest condolences. Ms. Effie rest well in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Kaye and Carolyn and family: for many reason I love, admire and will cherish Ms. Effie. Among them was her flair for fashion; her hugs and words of encouragement. The time she took to teach me how to make a can of greens taste like garden fresh. But most of all, this marvelous woman allowed me to call her MOM!!!
