Mrs. Effie Mae (Smith) Stanley

June 10, 1926 – August 12, 2022

Sister Effie Mae Smith Stanley was born on June 10, 1926 in Horry County, Little River, South Carolina but raised in the Thomasboro community of the Township of Shallotte, North Carolina. Effie was called to the Lord on August 12, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Allen Smith and Mary Bellamy Livingston Smith in a beautiful blended family of nine children.

Effie was always wise beyond her years and continued to learn throughout her life. In fact, as an example to her grandchildren of the importance of learning, she attended adult education classes while in Miami, Florida.

Effie met and later married James Malcolm Stanley. Effie was fiercely independent and had a warrior spirit. She especially exhibited these qualities as she lovingly cared for her family and those in the community. She was known as a wonderful cook and baker, who loved to feed people whether at family gatherings or her friends and neighbors in the community.

Effie was primarily a housewife but she was also an active member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Supply, North Carolina, where she proudly served with the Women’s Mission Group and on the usher board. Additionally, as was typical for her, she volunteered to support the church in various other activities/events and in various capacities. She was an active member of the church until she moved to Miami, Florida with her daughter “Kaye” in 2010 where she spent her last years.

Effie was preceded in death by her husband, James Malcolm Stanley, and seven of her siblings: Harvey Smith, Emma Smith, Agnes Stanley, Marie Gore, Retha Stevenson, Alberta Bernard, Allene Stanley. She is survived by her two loving daughters: Arcarolyn “Kaye” Gibson and Carolyn Bryant; sister: Mary McMillian; son-in-law, James Gibson; four grandchildren: James Gibson, Jason Gibson, Joseph Gibson and Katelyn Bryant; three sisters-in-law: Barbara Stevenson Stanley, Catherine Stanley Robinson, and Mildred Stanley Watson; one former brother-in-law: Charlie Ray Vaught; best friend: Marylee Bryant; as well as host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
