Mrs. Anna Mae Phifer, 88, of 111 Smith Alley, Whiteville , NC died, Sunday, April 27, 2014 at home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11:30 AM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahâs Witnesses, 711 Grove St. , Whiteville, NC 28472. Anna Mae Phifer, daughter of the late Emma Powell Cousar and Henry Britian Cousar was born Ferruary 11, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio. She departed life Sunday, April 27, 2014 at her home. Â Anna was the devoted wife of the late Robert Phifer, Jr. She worked as a seamstress in Whiteville, NC and later in Washington, DC where she retired. After retirement The Phifers opened their hearts and home and became foster parents caring for and raising over 80 foster children who affectionately referred to her as Grandma. The love and care provided by the Phifers over the years earned them the title of Washington, D.C. Foster Parents of the Year. Anna dedicated her life to Jehovah and was an active member of Woodridge Congregation of Jehovahâs Witnesses in Washington, D.C. In 1994 Anna moved back to North Carolina and was an active member of the Whiteville Congregation of Jehovahâs Witnesses. Anna leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Sheila Wesley (Nathaniel) of Tallahassee, FL, E. Gayle George (Charles) of Whiteville, NC, Irma Gaither of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Deborah Black (Terry) of Cheltenham, MD; two Stepsons , Jamal Phifer (Cheryl) of Washington, DC, and Douglas Phifer (Rochelle) of Atlanta, GA; stepdaughter Yvette Phifer of New York ; Grandchildren, S. Bernard Phifer, Crystal Burrell, Byron Mitchell, Michelle Mitchell, Gevalle Gaither, Jason Deville, Jessica DeVille Landon, and Jada Black; a host of Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren; one Sister Melba Sutton of Fayetteville, NC; one Brother James Hill of Whiteville, NC and a host of Nieces, Nephews and other relatives.
