Mr. James Johnson

James H. Johnson – “The Omega Man”  James Henry Johnson, 83, entered the elite fraternity of God on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Agape Hospice of Florence.  He was born in Shallotte, NC as the eldest son of John Henry Johnson and Lena Bryant. Brother Johnson attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC where he earned a degree in Chemistry. He later earned a MS degree from Howard University in Washington, DC.  Brother Johnson enrolled in the U. S. Army as a commissioned officer and served several years in Europe. After serving his country he was employed in various positions as a Chemist at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York, Knoll Pharmaceuticals in Orange, NJ, Hoffman La Roche in Nutley, NJ and he retired from Roche Carolina in Florence, SC.  Brother Johnson was an active member of the American Chemical Society, NY Academy of Science and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.  It was through the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity that he became a mentor to the new, young pledges. He served on the Chi Iota Chapter Executive Board for 8 years as the Keeper of Records and Seals. He also served as Chairman of the Reclamation and Retention Committee and assisted in rewriting the Chapter By-Laws. While serving as Chairman, the Reclamation and Retention Committee received the 6th District 2015 Award. Brother Johnson was selected as Omega Man of the Year for 2013 – 2014.  Brother Johnson was also an avid golfer and introduced many of his associates to the sport. In spite of his age he always played from the regular tees. Some of the other pastimes he enjoyed were listening to and collecting Jazz and Blues music, attending family gatherings, oyster bakes, anything related to chemistry and learning new technology and gadgets.  Brother Johnson is survived by his wife of 55 years, M. L. Johnson of Florence, SC. Survivors also include his son, Phillip Johnson, his daughter-in-law, Deborah Johnson and his grand-daughter Danyell Johnson of Iselin, NJ; his daughter, Jamie Reid and his son-in-law, Audley Reid of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; his siblings Kenneth Johnson, Allene Johnson, Marva Brown, and Doris Murrell and a host of extended family members in Shallotte, NC.  Funeral services will be held for James H. Johnson on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 1:00 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Supply, NC (1229 Cedar Grove Rd SW, Supply, NC 28462). Family visitation will be held Friday, August 28 from 12 PM to 6 PM at Peoples Funeral Home in Shallotte, NC (5190 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, NC 28459) and from 12 PM to 1 PM only before the service on Saturday, August 29 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
